Today I saw a car with a bumper sticker. It said, "FREADOM" Just like that - part red, part blue. What does that mean? Does it mean reading makes us free? Does it mean we should be free to read? Is it a reference to Salman Rushdie? Is there a country out there that isn't letting its people read and buying this bumper sticker contributes a dollar to fight this atrocity?
I guess this leads us to a bigger question. What is the purpose of a bumper sticker? Is it to inform others? Is it for the personal satisfaction the driver gets from believing he or she is making a statement? If either, shouldn't the rest of us be able to comprehend the message?
